Enter the Night Book Description:

In Comes the Night, Alex Robbins, Brooke Saunders and Maryanne Hemlock, three troubled seniors at Streep Academy, learned to escape their pain — escape their very bodies — by casting a dark piece of themselves out through the stained glass window high in the attic of their dorm, Harvell House.

Casting has been the salvation of each of the girls, but particularly for Maryanne. The wholesome good girl of the trio, Maryanne nevertheless harbors a secret — and a darkness — unrivaled by tattooed scenester Alex or beautiful badass Brooke. Casting provides Maryanne a desperately needed reprieve from her guilt and pain, but it’s become like a drug. And as with any drug, it only masks the real problems … and brings dangers of its own.

When Maryanne starts dating Bryce Walker, son of the notorious “Heller” hunter Ira Walker, is it first love, or is there a darker, more self-destructive impulse at play? As the superstitious citizens of Mansbridge begin to mutter and scan the night skies for Hellers, can the hunted lie down with the hunter and emerge unscathed?

Excerpt 3 – Enter the Night
SETUP: Brooke calls her mother in New York, yearning for things to be the way they were when it was just her and her mom, before her mother met her new husband. Her mother’s reception is a little chilly, though, since the last time Brooke was home over Christmas, she helped herself to her step-father’s booze.

Brooke snorted. “Come on, mom, I’m not the first kid to have ever raided the liquor cabinet. It’s not like I went out and got myself arrested or anything.”
In the pause that followed, Brooke heard what her mother didn’t say. Not yet.
Finally, Gracie Saunders spoke. “I know, darling, but with that…incident…that happened up there last fall… Well, you really need to keep your nose clean, sweetie.”
Brooke sucked in a breath through her teeth. “That was self-defense, Mother. That lunatic was going to kill us!”
“I know,” her mother rushed to say. “I know you did nothing wrong. But darling, if you and those Canadian girls hadn’t been trying to solve a mystery on your own, you wouldn’t have—”
“Okay!” Brooke unclenched her left hand and looked at the four crescents her nails had left in her palm. “You’re right, Mom. Let’s change the subject. How was Barbados?”
Her mother sighed. “Are you still angry about that? Because Kendall and I have nothing to apologize for. We both work very hard. I don’t think you have any appreciation for how much we—”
Not that talk again. “Mom, look, I gotta go. Talk to you later.”
“Wait!”
Brooke blinked back tears. “What is it, Mom? I have to go.”
“Did you…um…want something? Need something?”
Yeah, Mom. I wanted to talk to you. I wanted you to ask me what’s going on in my life and if I’m okay. I had a shitty day and I needed to hear your voice.
That’s what she wanted. What she needed. She pressed a hand to her temple.
“Yeah, I must be in trouble if I call you.” Her grip tightened on the cell phone. “Send in a crack legal team, right?”
Gracie Saunders sighed again. “Be serious with me, Brooke. Do you need money? Is that it?”
“Yeah, that’s it,” Brooke said, her voice wooden now. “Can you drop another grand in my account?” Might as well extract what she could.
“Okay. I’ll have to juggle some things. You can look for it by, say, Tuesday. Is that soon enough?”
“That’d be great. Okay, gotta go.”
“Brooke? Are you all right? You’re not in trouble, are you?”
Finally, Brooke heard her mother in that last question. The mother she remembered. Concern for her, not for what Herr Kommandant or anyone else thought about her.
“No, I’m fine. Bye, Mom.” She blinked back tears and closed the phone.
A knock sounded on the door. “Are you planning on coming out of there any time this year?”
Brooke recognized the speaker, a surprisingly tough customer for a freshman. “Screw off. I’ll be out when I’m ready.”
The girl stomped off, muttering. Brooke cranked the bathroom window open, lit a cigarette she didn’t want, took one drag off it, then tossed it in the toilet and flushed it. There. Everyone would think she’d come in here to sneak a smoke. Better for her reputation all the way around.
The smart-assed freshman came up the hall as Brooke was making her way back to bed, but Brooke gave no ground. The other girl took one look into her eyes and shrank out of the way.
Smart girl.
